For this breast cancer survivor, insight into her genes motivated her to make life-changing health decisions affecting her whole family.
“As a breast cancer survivor, I was really surprised to discover that my results showed I didn’t have a high genetic risk for breast cancer. The genetic counsellor explained that, in addition to my DNA, the lifestyle I lead influences my future health.
As I realised how important a role our lifestyle plays in triggering disease at a later stage, I started making some life-changing health decisions to benefit my whole family. Teaching my children the virtues of a healthy lifestyle early on, it has now become an integral part of our lives.
Slapping on sun block is as routine as brushing their teeth. They never learned to drink fizzy drinks routinely and thus hardly ever ask for it, while being physically active is encouraged as a family pastime. My children will hopefully be blessed with a lifetime of good health as they are learning important health habits from a very young age”. – Wilma V, mother of two
